Yesterday we had to vote for our local government.  I helped my parents go through a questionnaire from our local public radio website: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/projects/ongoing/select_a_candidate/poll.php?race_id=24
This questionnaire helps determine which governor candidate fits your ideas about running the state.

I also asked Boris to go over it.  Boris and I usually vote each other out when we vote.  So, this time I did not insist that he would go vote and he didn’t :).  My dad, who thinks that he got enough of socialism in USSR, blindly votes for Republicans.  So, as we went through all questions, it turned out that he agreed more on the issues that Mark Dayton (DFL) presented and very little agreement with the other candidates.

I voted and decided not to worry about the results because I don’t have control over that.  Whatever happens, happens.  Before bed, I looked at the Star Tribune and saw some results.  In the morning I heard that there is an issue and need for recount.

Truly, I don’t want to follow it anymore and waste my energy on something that I absolutely have no control over.  Or do I?

My understanding of Democrats and Republicans is that Democrats usually think about all people and living things, more collectivistic in some ways, at times too considerate too liberal.  Republicans seem to be more egoistic and individualistic thinking mainly about their own pockets without any consideration for the needy.  Yet Republicans can have boundaries.  I like the collectivistic consideration for all yet liberalism with boundaries.
OK, I will stop here because I can keep going with many examples and arguments…

Our preferred candidate is up by 9000 votes. It's not very likely that a recount will get anywhere close to that number. Your vote matters, don't say that you don't have any control over what happens. I think that if you don't vote, then you don't have any right to complain. So vote (and then complain)

I meant that I don't have any control over what is going to happen after I vote.

The argument between you who support Dems and me who support Repubs.
I just know one thing - we left USSR for the reason and I don't want to come back when everyone was the same. Communism is not so good, as you know. Capitalism is not a dirty word, it's ok to be reach and it's ok to wish to be reach, otherwise, why to come to the US??

There is nothing wrong about being rich as long as people becoming rich ethically and don't cause harm to others.

Unfortunately there are so many businesses that run scams, that government needs to spend more money and time to develop regulations that would save people from these money makers (for example, sell products that are poisonous or use chip materials that is of bad quality that may cause bad accidents, not care about environment until it is too late and many people suffer from various cancers).

Just making money and becoming rich is not a good life goal!

Middle class Republicans talk about living them alone when they are healthy and able to do what they are doing. Once they get injured or can't function as before, or their relatives become disabled they are often happy that there are some government programs in place to help, they also get mad that it is not enough.

In USSR there were some great things that could be useful here too for example secondary education system, free after school programs for kids. We also cared about our neighbors and had wonderful relationships with people instead of keeping it all to ourselves. I didn't know people who suffered from depression there.

I work with homeless people and those who are on welfare. Looking at their situations makes me appreciate what I have and I make more donation contributions for the causes.
After all, we were on welfare too when came to USA and didn't speak any English.

Speaking about brain wash....
I used to live in Israel for many years as well as my husband. We know what universal health care means, it's when you have to wait for months (!!!) to get an x-ray or any other medical procedure. Yes, it's free and for everyone, BUT when you need urgent help you have to wait. No, I don't want to stay in line with illegals while I pay big bucks.

it's a useless argument, as I said...
