where do babies come from?
Mar. 24th, 2011 11:27 pmYesterday, in between our guests and getting Mishka to bed I managed to explain to him where babies come from. He started asking me very persistently. One of his arguments was that Liza, his cousin, knew about it since she was 2. I told him that we have guests and I will do it some other day. He was very persistent, so before bed time I explained it to him and was very glad that I bought the book Anatomy for the kids.
I started explaining to him about the seed and the flower. When we plant a seed in the dirt after a while there will be a flower. Same is with babies. A seed gets into mommy’s tummy and the baby begins to grow. He immediately asked me” how does the seed get into mommy’s tummy, is someone cutting it open?”
Then I showed the pictures in the book. The book has a very tasteful explanation with drawings of man’s and woman’s reproductive organs. Everything else I pointed out on the pictures. There was no talk about sex; just about the seed called sperm getting into the egg (it is pretty abstract for 7yr old). I think talking about sex is a little bit too early for him and will just gross him out now.
After that they showed pictures of baby growing in the tummy. Then we got to the part how does the baby get out of the tummy. He asked me if “babies come out from the butt.” I showed on the picture that from here women poop and from here they pee and give birth to the babies.
Then we got to the breastfeeding. He was amazed to learn that milk comes only after baby is born. We had a short discussion about the structure of our body that has been designed so perfectly with everything it needs to function and restore itself.
He listened very seriously like he understood everything. He is just 7 year old, that was enough for him. He felt very mature after that talk!
