95th birthday!

ahkaThis was a fun weekend!
We started partying on Friday night at the restaurant Baku. It was Boris’ grandpa’s 95th birthday. He looked great! He did not change in his appearance since I met him for the first time about 15 years ago. Of course he complains of some aches and pains here and there but walks and talks and thinks and even remembers everything. He is an amazing person who lived through so much!!!
He went through the whole World War II, accidently got stock in Lenigrad (St. Peterspburg) siege when came home after being wounded for a few days. Survived the siege and helped his family survive by feeding them construction glue. After the siege was over, he continued fighting in the war and made it to Berlin!
After the war, he got married and had his first daughter, my mother-in-law. Very soon his wife died just because there was no penicillin available at that time. He was raising his young daughter by himself for a long time looking for wife that would treat his daughter like her own. He finally found the one who gave birth to another daughter. His dear wife got very sick and he took care of her until she passed in 1998.
Throughout the years he was working as construction worker pretty much all his life. Even when he came to USA, he was helping his children and even us (grandchildren) do our house remodeling. We usually consult him on any remodeling projects.
He has 2 grandsons and now 3 great grand kids, 2 of ours and one Boris’ cousin’s. I really want Michael spend some time with his great grandpa, but no matter how I try to connect them it would not work. I am very sad about it.
So, it was nice to be with him at the restaurant and show him his great grand kids. I wish we could see him more often. I wanted him to tell Michael about his war experiences but he does not want to talk about the war. I guess I understand him why. I wish he could teach him something but great grandpa does not want Michael to get attached to him. Nevertheless, I think that it is amazing to have great grandparents alive and fully functioning. I wish he would be more interested in being part of his great grand-kids’ lives.
