Today was Student Success day on campus of our college. On this day, students don’t have classes. Staff and faculty present in break-out sessions on different topics to students and usually there is a keynote speaker presents during lunch time in the cafeteria.
I was busy in my office with clients in the morning and then decided to go and listen to Jermaine Davis, the keynote speaker. He spoke at the previous student success days and other conferences. This guy really knows how to speak, engage and motivate people. I wish I could speak like that…
Today, he focused his lecture/speech/conversation on “Courageous Conversations: Building Sustainable Relationships.” I really enjoyed all of the points that he made breaking down complicated terms and concepts of human communication and giving examples from his own life.
He discussed importance of listening and not putting people down. He explained that each of us has a story and we love to tell our story if asked, so “if one wants to win someone’s heart, they need to give them their ear” Jermaine said.
Jermaine discussed our human “baseline” and made the audience repeat this word several times. The “baseline” is our normal relaxed behavior and we should learn to control ourselves and to be aware when we are off from our baseline (angry, etc.).
It was a great speech and I hope our students and some staff would really use these communication concepts.
