movie making frustration

ahkaI have been working on putting together a movie about my dad's party. Actually, I created one successfully, only my "clients" were not satisfied with the first version and asked me to redo it using other video material that was better quality then the one I used.
My computer is very slow and it took a really long time to complete the 1st movie. Anyway, I started working on the second one. I got almost to the end and my Pinacle crashed. Boris can' t find the installation disk to reinstall it. I am just so frustrated again. It took so much of my time already and again for nothing.
I truly enjoy making these movies when the program works well. However, it has been so slow! I would click on a file that I want to add to the movie and it will take about 3 to 4 minutes to open, then I would move it and it will take same amount of time to get there.... There is an end to my patience...
I guess these few weeks were not my lucky movie making weeks :(
Any recommendations for a good movie making program that is affordable?
