4th day this month schools in our state are closed.  Today they even closed our college.

Sun is shining, snow sparkling, we are home.  I guess it is cold out there...

My schedule was so full, I was complaining that I don't have time to get a haircut.  I am thankful for this time off :)
Just scheduled an appointment for a haircut :)

Every year, as part of my job I go to different events and represent our TRiO organization (TRiO is a Federally funded program that helps low-income 1st generation college access higher education to break out of poverty).  On Monday, there was an event called Project Homeless Connect.  This time it was in Minneapolis Convention center and it was a huge event funded by many companies and corporations.  There were a lot of resources for the homeless and people who live in poverty.  There were a lot of volunteers from corporations, from government projects and programs, health care facilities, etc.

The event was very well organized and I was amazed that they got so many volunteers.  They managed to attach a volunteer to each visitor.  Those volunteers walked together, some helped push the strollers with kids behind the individual while the individual would talk to us at the tables and get information and resources they needed.

All visitors and volunteers were fed lunch and they made sure that everyone had water bottles to drink throughout the day.  I was working in the education and employment room; the other rooms provided information and resources about housing, welfare benefits, health care.  They had health and wellness room where they could meet with doctors, dentists, mental health professionals on the spot.  All of the professionals were volunteers for the day or for a few hours rotating with their co-workers.

There were a lot of mentally ill homeless people.  It was depressing to see so many of them in the same area.  I often work with some of these people in my office and when I work with them nothing bothers me but this was overwhelming.

The most upsetting for me was observing the kids with their ill parents.  Generally, it was upsetting to see that there are people that could not be helped in improving their life or at least I couldn’t see their situations improve.  I guess I was more upset that I felt powerless listening to their stories when they stopped by our table.  Most of them are not good college material because of their cognition and developmental impairments.  Thinking of Maslow’s hierarchy model, these people don’t have their basic needs met, no safe shelter and food on regular basis.

I thought that it was great that people who work in corporations had a chance to be involved in this event and see the poverty first hand.  Hopefully, appreciating their lives more and be more generous when it comes to charity requests and taxes.

It is the end of my workday.  I was busy with clients and a lot of paperwork.  Now, I have about 40 minutes and too tired to continue paperwork.  I checked all my e-mails and there is not even 1 junk e-mail.  I checked FaceBook and it is so quite there!

People, where are you??? what are you doing at the end of your work day when don't want to begin any new projects and pretty sick and tired of the day tasks?

I checked my LJ friend posts already :)))

I have not been writing about our political situation in our state and I wish, I didn’t have to follow politics but being a state and federal employee it is unavoidable.  Here is the article from MPR with more details about the situation:

Overwhelming week continues… Today, we cut one event during the day off from out plans and it was an OK day.  I even had some time to take a nap with Michelle after we got home from brunch.  In the evening Yulka invited bunch of people over our house to see everyone she hasn’t had time to see during her stay here.

As I started thinking that the crazy eventful time is getting to the end, I got my calendar notification that reminded me of the conference that I will be attending starting tomorrow afternoon and until Thursday lunch time.  The conference is in downtown Mpls and I will be parking my car at work and then walk or take a bus to the Hilton Mpls.  That reminds me that I need to get comfortable shoes and umbrella.

I am going to the conference all by myself.  I hope I will meet people that I know or meet someone that I will be comfortable to hangout for the next 4 days.  I hope I will learn a lot of interesting stuff.  It is Minnesota Social Services Association (MSSA) conference.  I have never heard of this organization until this year.  Work is paying for it and I will get 27 CEUs that I need to keep up my professional credentials.

Being away from the office means that I will have bunch of voice mail to return and appointments scheduled for the next 2 weeks solid.  I hate when I am so booked, it just adds stress to my life.

November has been super busy and eventful.   I would usually write about  each event separately but I don’t have any time for that, so I will have to just make this list for myself with some resources.

Today, I looked at the list of open positions at our college and one position gave me a breakthrough idea.
The position is a faculty position teaching early child development class.  I looked at the description and I thought to myself, “hm…. becoming a college instructor is not such a bad idea, I have credentials, experience with kids at the daycare, my own kids, play therapy, parenting, teaching dance at the Harmony Theatre, child development classes in undergrad and grad schools, I have experience working with adults who will be my potential students.  The only thing I am lacking is teaching and developing curriculum.”

So, I also started to think about watching out for positions teaching Human Services classes too at community colleges.  I am planning to talk to the department of early child development and ask them if they would be willing to hire someone who really wants to learn how to teach college level class and also ask questions about the curriculum.

I will talk to my friend who already teaches at a college.
I started adjusting my resume adding all of my child development related experiences.  I guess I need to write a really thoughtful cover letter explaining how my experiences relate to the position.

I do need to get some teaching experience, that's for sure.

I think I am ready to move in that direction.
