I don't really like to cook and haven't  done much real cooking or baking lately.  However, last week saw a video on my friend's FaceBook wall and got inspired to create this beauty.  I don't really like sweet pastries, that's why I hardly ever make them.   Here is the inspiration video:

Kids loved making it and it turned out delicious and beautiful.  I used frozen puff pastry dough that I had in my freezer.  Here is our creation:

Finally, I got time to bake Challah bread.  Here is the recipe that we got in Jerusalem.  It is a different recipe from the one I used before.  The doe turned out very good and almost run away from my big bowl.
Kids were helping to braid the doe and it was the most challenging part of baking Challah.  Kids were fighting for the doe and for the space and were braking my concentration from the braiding with new tips.  At the end, Challah turned out pretty delicious, only my husband burned it a little.  He turned on broil to make it gold and forgot about it until it was too late.

Sunday
Today we went to Masada where some of us got Jewish names.  We celebrated by singing and dancing.   We had an interesting tour with Ken Spiro around the site.  The view from the top of Masada was breathtaking.  The weather was perfect.  It was not as hot as it is in the summer, it was around 80F.  We were the first tourist group to get up and it got crowded only by the end of the tour.

Shabbat, Days 6 and 7
On Friday we were preparing for Shabbat.  In the morning we had a lecture about power of candle lighting and women’s prayers.  Then we made CHalah bread and learned cool ways to braid it.  During the process we prayed all together for people who need health or something that a miracle is needed for.  The power of 150+ women praying is a huge power.  I hope it will help my friend beat cancer and another friend to finally have a baby.

Both Mishka and Michelka  liked this soup, which is a surprise to me :)  Instead of rice I added oatmeal.  They both had fun sprinkling shredded cheese in.

weekend

I have been on the roll cooking this weekend.  I cooked on Friday and then on Saturday night after sunset baked challah bread.  On Sunday, it was Michael’s turn to bring challah snack to his religious school class at the Synagogue.  Since I started late, I finished baking after midnight.  Michael and Michelle both were helping me braid challahs.  The house smelled heavenly!!!

On Sunday, I continued to cook.  I had a lot of vegetables that would go bad if I don’t make anything before weekend was over, so I made gazpacho, barley and mushroom soup, salad Oliv’e and cabbage pie.  It took me only 2 hours to finish cooking.

In the evening we had guests.  We ate and then went trick or treating in our neighborhood.  Michelle enjoyed walking around with her bucket and collecting candy for the first time in her life.  Some houses were scary-fun decorated and she was reluctant to visit some but was brave if I would carry her.  She even laughed at some scary things that she was scared at first.  It was great to see our neighbors having fun!

After we went back home we enjoyed tea with sweets.  The company was wonderful!  Michelle enjoyed playing with the girl who is just a little bit older then her.  Michael enjoyed opening the door and giving candy to other kids.  We enjoyed tea and conversation.

Talking about conversations…  Lately, at home I can’t have any conversation that my full attention goes into it.  I constantly have to keep an eye on the kids while I am talking or doing anything.  I have noticed that I have not finished so many stories because I would need to stop and run after Michelle who is trying to go upstairs by herself or stop Michael from making Michelle cry, or they would interrupt me with questions or their behavior.  It is kind of annoying.  It calls for the desire to have girls (or adults only) night out when we can talk and not be interrupted.

I have realized that to enjoy cooking one must have all the right tools first and then understand the ingredients (there are still a lot that I have no clue what that is -- internet is helping with that).

I used to hate cooking and my kitchen had very few pots and one fryer.  Then I bought set of glass containers different sizes that I can use in the oven and I started baking things, then we bought set of pots and fryers and we started cooking more.  My mom gave me mixer even though I told her that I don't really need it since I don't cook but it turned out to be very handy when I make cabbage pie and other new things.  Then my blander died and after a long while I bought Ninja.  I love it and use it instead of manual shredder (тёрка)!!! very quick and no pain in my wrists.

I have been making various versions of gazpacho with my Ninja ever since I tried to make it for the first time.  Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] _milashka  for introducing me to this yummy yummy dish.

Now, I think I need dough roller and maybe even a food processor.

Yesterday, I baked an apple pie, I didn’t have dough to cover the pie but it turned out yummy and cute with just apples inside the crust.  My mother-in-law liked it and she also told me that I could have just mixed everything up – apples with dough from scratch (eggs, flour, apples, sugar, etc…) and baked it.  Some day I will try that too.

Anyway, I am much better cook then I was a year ago and my repertoire is getting wider.  There is a lot more to do and try and learn.  [livejournal.com profile] foodclub_ru has been super helpful too!!!

I made turkey cutlets and Michael at first didn’t want to try them.  He is usually pretty picky about food that I make.  So, finally he tried my cutlet and after a pause made big eyes and said that this is the best cutlet he has ever tried in his life.  Then he ate about 10 of them.  He said: “Mama, your cutlets are better then grandma’s!”

I was glad that he liked what I cooked and told him that it was a real compliment that really touched me!  I blended celery with onions and a lot of garlic and mixed it with the ground turkey with eggs and matzo meal then seasoned it well.  I made the same cutlets today for dinner and everyone gave a lot of compliments again.  I improvised and for the first time in my life it turned out pretty good looking and very good tasting.

I got hang of simple cooking and was on the roll on Friday.  I got home from work and started cooking.  I made mushroom pie that was amazing!  It is very simple to make and it is so yummy!!!  I will try to translate the recipe when I have time.

I made soup gazpacho for the first time in my life which is also super simple to make and very yummy and refreshing on a hot day.  It was my first time to try it too.

In addition to that I marinated chicken and baked it covered and also made Spanish rice.  So, mainly it accidently turned out to be Spanish kitchen.  Boris was impressed!!! (I was too ).

On Saturday morning Boris continued my cooking roll by making very delicious breakfast burritos.

We had and still have enough food for a weekend and some for a week.

The mushroom pie was gone in a second on Friday though.   Now, I really want to go to the woods and collect some mushrooms to make this pie again from different mushrooms then I got at cub foods.

I have been eating a lot of yummy food this weekend and today decided that I need to do a lot of walking and running, so I took kids to the park in the morning and then in the evening twice.  Just out of curiosity I had my step counter with me all day.  So, by now I made a little over 11,000 steps that does not count running with M&M while playing soccer in the field and on the playground.  I truly need to move more during the week.  I counted my steps during the week and it appears to be that I make on average only 3,000 and it should be at least 10,000 to stay fit.  I need to start taking dance classes!!!
