Every 2nd Sunday of the month, MIA has a family day with various activities for the kids.  Every month they have a different theme.  I took kids to the three previous days and can't wait to go there in September.  What a wonderful place to spend time with kids, find interesting art pieces, make art and hangout together.

In August, the theme of the day was insects and outdoors.  Kids made bugs out of clay, they made origami bug with real neon light and we were doing a scavenger hunt all over the museum.  After finding all paintings, kids got plastic toy bugs of their choice.
One of the pictures that we had to find was this one:

On Sunday, we had a busy and very warm day.  After spending day at home on Saturday resting, I was determined to have adventures on Sunday.  Kids woke up at about 8am, by the time we got dressed and ate breakfast it was almost 10am.  My friend and I agreed to take kids to Macy’s annual holiday display show.  I have heard about this show but never had a chance to go there.  So, we packed kids in their car seats and went to downtown Minneapolis.  We parked at the ramp of Radisson hotel.  The ramp was heated, so we left all our jackets in the car, took elevator to the skyway level.  Girls enjoyed running in the store and riding on the elevators.  Mishka kept hanging on me, I guess he was jealous that I was holding Michelle more often then I paid attention to him.  He kept trying to tell me some story about some football players that I didn’t have interest or time or place to listen to.  I had to watch out after running Michelle, keep up conversation with my friend and find the right way to go.

I had a wonderful day communicating with my friends.  In the morning I called my friend in Germany then my friend in Kiev and talked to several friends here.

Then I took kids and my friend with her son to the Ukrainian Heritage Festival in Minneapolis.  The weather was great!   There was music, dancing, singing, food, games for kids and a lot of people.  I was surprised that it was very inexpensive unlike all other festivals that I have been to before.

It was interesting to listen to real Ukrainian language and even speak some myself.  I saw one woman there that looked just like my theatre director from Kiev 20 years ago.  I asked her if it was her but it wasn’t.  However, we found that she also finished same university as that woman did.  I met some people that I know there.  Michael enjoyed playing games and even though he didn’t always make on target, they still let him get a prize.  They gave ice-cream for free.

Michelle stayed in the stroller for a long time but then of course got tired and wanted to run around.  I really liked that event and would love to come back next year.

In the afternoon when we came home, unexpectedly we had a full house of guests and I fed them dinner that I cooked on the spot.  I really enjoyed being surrounded by friends!

After dinner we went for a walk in our neighborhood with our friends and kids.  It was gorgeous evening but kind of cool.  The day ended with tea and Michelle's pearls that I will write about separately.

I was waiting for this weekend last week with hope to get some sleep that got lost when Michelle kept me up every night.  On Saturday, it was my morning to get some sleep and I was in bed until 10:30am (I think I would've slept longer).  Then we planned to go to the Independence Lake for a picnic.  Finally, by about 1pm we made it to the lake.  The weather was ideal for such picnic.  Two more families with kids joined us.

On Sunday, we went to the Science museum to see that Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition.  My friend was supposed to go with her boyfriend and I talked Boris into going.  By the day we were supposed to go, her boyfriend changed his mind and Boris kept changing his mind.

So, finally we decided that we would go without men.  We suspected that if they go, they would just complain about everything.  We finally met, got in the car and started driving.  We drove for about 5 minutes when Boris called and said that he changed his mind and he wants to come with us.  So, we returned back, picked him up and went to St. Paul.

Last Thursday, we went to the Oakwood elementary school in the evening to participate in their international night.  My friend Alina, as a mother of a student at that school, volunteered to represent Ukraine.

The event was held at the school’s gym that was full of people.  Around the walls, there were tables that represented different countries.  At each table one could have learned something about that country, get stamp in the passport; answer trivia question, get some candy or small souvenir and do some activity.

In the middle of the gym were held dance and music performances represented from many different cultures.  Some performers were little kids and they were great!  The costumes also were authentic and beautiful.

Michael was not feeling well and at first was clinging to me and not really enjoying the event.  Once we figured out what was where, and found Alina and our other friend with her son, Michael got into the activities at each table.

Especially he liked to play at the table that represented Japan where he used chopsticks to move little plastic bits or dry rice pieces from one bowl into another.  Also, he liked playing with the castanets at the table that represented Spain.

Everyone who represented a country were volunteer parents.  Each had pictures, maps, items that represented that culture and country.  I helped Alina print some pictures of Ukrain that she beautifully arranged on the displays.  Most of the pictures she took herself this summer when she went to Ukraine.

By the time event was over, Michael felt better and even started running around with his friends and even wrestling.  The only thing was challenging for me is to take any pictures and especially of him.  He refused to be photographed and made everything possible to screw up my pictures.  Well, I made a few pictures while he was not looking.
